Myths About Hypnosis (and the Truth)

Myth 1: Hypnosis is mind control. Reality: You stay in charge the whole time. You can open your eyes, shift, or stop at any moment. Hypnosis is cooperation, not control. Myth 2: I’ll spill secrets or say things I don’t want to. Reality: You won’t say or do anything against your values. You decide what to share, just like in a regular conversation. Myth 3: People get “stuck” in hypnosis. Reality: Impossible. Hypnosis is a natural, focused state (like being absorbed in a book). If a session ended mid-way, you’d simply emerge on your own. Myth 4: Only gullible or weak-minded people can be hypnotized. Reality: Hypnosis works best with focused minds. Thoughtful, creative, and analytical people often do exceptionally well. Myth 5: Hypnosis is sleep or unconsciousness. Reality: You’re awake, aware, and relaxed. You’ll hear my voice and remember what matters—just less distracted by mental noise. Myth 6: Hypnosis is a magic one-session cure for everything. Reality: It can create fast shifts, but lasting change comes from a personalized plan, repetition, and simple daily actions. Myth 7: Hypnosis will make me relive trauma intensely. Reality: I use a trauma-aware, resource-first approach. You never have to revisit details to heal patterns. You set the pace and can pause anytime. Myth 8: Hypnosis can recover perfect, courtroom-ready memories. Reality: Memory is reconstructive, not a video recorder. I focus on present-moment change, not legal investigations. Myth 9: Hypnosis is against my faith. Reality: Hypnosis is a neutral, natural state—no belief system required. We use language that aligns with your values and boundaries. Myth 10: Stage hypnosis = clinical hypnosis. Reality: Stage shows are entertainment with volunteers primed for silliness. Coaching/hypnosis sessions are private, goal-focused, and consent-based. Myth 11: I can’t be hypnotized. Reality: Most people can enter light to medium trance. A trance is like being engrossed in a good movie or book. Did you ever drive and got lost in thought? That was a trance. Myth 12: Hypnosis replaces medical or mental-health care. Reality: It’s a supportive complement—not a substitute. I don’t diagnose or treat; I help you implement healthy habits and mindset shifts alongside your provider’s guidance. Myth 13: Online hypnosis doesn’t work. Reality: Virtual sessions are highly effective. With a quiet space, headphones, and a clear intention, many clients even prefer online for comfort and consistency. Myth 14: Hypnosis is just placebo. Reality: Even if expectation helps, I combine focused relaxation with strategic suggestions, skills training, and measurable action steps so you can see and feel change. Myth 15: Hypnosis will force me to reveal passwords or private info. Reality: You retain full control and critical thinking. Ethical practitioners never seek private information—period. Myth 16: Kids or older adults can’t use hypnosis. Reality: With age-appropriate language and goals, hypnosis can be adapted across ages. As always, consent and safety come first. Myth 17: I must go “deep” for it to work. Reality: Depth isn’t everything. Many goals respond beautifully at light–medium levels of trance where you’re relaxed and responsive. Myth 18: Hypnosis is the same as meditation, so it’s redundant. Reality: They overlap in calm focus, but hypnosis is typically more goal-directed with targeted suggestions for specific outcomes.
